With half of Earth’s species facing the risk of extinction, Cortada examines epochs of past and present with the goal of inviting the viewer to ponder what future life forms may look like.

“We as a society sometimes don’t think of ourselves in the context of space and time and how it is we came to be as both biological and societal beings.  Through EPOCH, I’m trying to put humanity in the context of the natural history of planet Earth.  One must realize we are all by-products of an ongoing evolutionary process that has dramatically developed over the last 25 epochs since the Cambrian explosion 540 million years ago.”

Conversations and thoughts on time, growth, and extinction are brought to light thanks to Cortada’s unique interpretation of the individual’s adaptations or lack-thereof. As we move through the current epoch, the Anthropocene, humans themselves are changing the global climate and Earth’s ecosystems. Our reckless emission of greenhouse gases into the atmosphere, along with our extensive use of pesticides, our endless yearning for fertile land, and our unyielding population growth are greatly accelerating the rate of extinction of our fellow species.

A decade ago, Cortada launched his Endangered World project at the South Pole to bring awareness to biodiversity loss and the sixth mass extinction we are currently undergoing.  The environmental art project has addressed global biodiversity loss through art installations at the South Pole (2007), North Pole (2008), Holland (2009) and Biscayne National Park (2010) and through online participatory art projects. “EPOCH” took Cortada’s “Endangered World” (www.endangeredworld.org) as a point of departure.

Epoch runs November 30th, 2017 through January 14th, 2018
