Silver Shores STEAM academy
6 feet above sea level
On May 1, 2026, Silver Shores STEAM Academy became another Broward County school to host The Underwater. This county-wide initiative uses public art to engage youth in climate resilience and empower the next generation of environmental leaders. Located just 6 feet above sea level, the school provided a powerful setting for students to explore the connection between geography, climate change, and their own future. Artist Xavier Cortada created a bold, site-specific elevation mural that now serves as a visual reminder of both vulnerability and resilience within the campus community. The children at Silver Shores STEAM Academy were incredibly bright and engaged, answering thoughtful questions and listening intently throughout the presentation. Their curiosity and enthusiasm reflected the dedication of their amazing teachers, who continue to inspire students to think critically about the world around them.
Youth Voices for a Resilient Future
During a dynamic climate assembly led by Xavier Cortada and Adam Roberti, students learned how sea level rise could directly impact South Florida and their everyday lives. Blending science, storytelling, and creative expression, the experience encouraged students to see themselves as part of the climate solution. Students also created their own Underwater elevation yard signs to place at home and spark conversations in their neighborhoods. We were also honored to welcome Commissioner Alexandra Davis, who joined students in discussing the importance of civic engagement and environmental stewardship.
Building Momentum
To extend the impact beyond the classroom, students designed elevation markers to display outside their homes, helping educate neighbors and families about sea-level rise and local climate vulnerability.
Silver Shores STEAM Academy students are now part of a growing youth-driven movement across Broward County that combines art, science, and civic action to build a more climate-resilient future.
